Shared Network but not for everybody

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

Recently I ran into a problem where I needed to password protect a shared folder on a public network. Without a domain controller Windows XP has some very basic network sharing settings. For the most part it’s an on or off switch.

I know you could disable ’simple file sharing’ (yup, that’s what Microsoft calls it) and have some domain-esk features, but what if you just want to throw a password on a folder? I found this little fancy how-to and It seemed to work very well.

Now when someone needs to access the share they are prompted for the password, or if you have a second machine that will be accessing this share often. You could check the ‘Remember Password’ box or easier, have the same password on both machines.

Anti Social Behaviour Order

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

This happened in England oddly. A man has been blaring Born in the USA every night and the neighbours complained. That’s Neighbours not neighbors.

He had over 100 complaints. I’m not sure if the man was actually born in the USA or just liked the song. I heard this on WXRT,

Papa Bear should do more of this on The O’Reilly Factor, maybe then I would watch the show. Until then I’ll stick with The Daily Show and Colbert Report.

Does Ballmer Need To Go?

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

Microsoft’s dramatic decision this weekend to withdraw its offer for Yahoo and not pursue a hostile bid raises a whole host of questions. What happens to Yahoo now? What happens to Microsoft? Or is this just a tactic to drive down the price of Yahoo
’s shares so that Microsoft can go hostile with a lower offer? does ballmer need to go?

Is Ubuntu usable enough for a non-tech-savvy girlfriend yet?

Monday, April 28th, 2008

The author asks his girlfriend to perform simple tasks using a fresh Ubuntu installation. It’s surprising how some of the simple things we assume to be easy are actually hard for someone who’s never used Linux. Interesting insight into how ready Linux is for the desktop.

Sitemap Plug In

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

I needed a good sitemap generator for ChicagoSportsTalk.com the problem is, this website is ran on WordpressMU. So I needed the sitemap generator that would be able to handle multiple blogs on one domain.

Jen, the designer of the website, suggested Google (XML) Sitemaps Generator for WordPress. The problem is it doesn’t support WordpressMu out of the box. So I found this article posted by Jerry Huang that explained how to make this plug in WordpressMu compatible. After a little bit of editing the plug in code, it worked like a charm. Now sitemaps are running on all the Blogs. Life is good…

Sports Website

Friday, April 25th, 2008

I started a sports website almost a month ago. Things are going good with it. I just wanted to put a little banner on the front page for awhile. Hopefully it’s not too obnoxious. I’ll probably be tinkering with it for a little bit. Let me know what you think. Feel free to join the discussion at ChicagoSportsTalk.com

A nice day at the Sox game

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

Tim and Joe

It’s about time we are getting some nice weather, although I hear it’s going to be bad this weekend. I went to the Sox game yesterday, it was a day game against the A’s. The young gun John Danks pitched a great game. I’m liking Orlando Cabrera and Alexei Ramirez, I think ever team should have a Ramirez or Cabrera on their team.
